Script&ScoreNFF2018
Netherlands Film Festival (NFF) and Buma Music in Motion (BMIM) are committed to making more and deeper connections between young filmmakers and the music sector within the NFF Talent Program which took place on September 30. The core idea is that young filmmakers and composers get acquainted with each other’s work, with composers who write music on the basis of screenplays in development, presenting themselves to filmmakers hoping to inspire and impress them. At BMIM, our hope is that this meet-up will lead to future collaborations and enrich the Netherlands' thriving and innovative audiovisual industries.

International Film Festival Rotterdam

MasterclassCliffMartinez.jpg
We are delighted that the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) has forged a partnership with BMIM for its 48th edition in 2019. BMIM contributed to the festival’s music activities and IFFR PRO Days, organising two special music-themed days bringing together filmmakers and composers. On Tuesday January 29th (16.00 - 17.30hr), composer Cliff Martinez (Drive, Spring Breakers and former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer) gave a masterclass about his work and the art of scoring. More information: iffr.com/en/2019/events/masterclass-cliff-martinez
Furthermore we highlighted six Dutch composers and their work during IFFR PRO. This year, following an open call, BMIM and IFFR selected the following composers, all of whom created excellent scores for movies which have premiered in theatres or at festivals: Ella van der Woude, Vincent van Warmerdam, Merlijn Snitker, Minco Eggersman, Floris Verbeij and Alex Simu. They were featured in the CineMart Dossier and got the chance to network with filmmakers during the CineMart sessions. For further information about IFFR Pro: iffr.com/en/pro-days-2019.

SyncWritingCamp.jpg
Dutch Music Export and BMIM have joined forces and we were delighted to present a "dream team" of music supervisors from the US, Germany, UK, the Netherlands and Denmark at Eurosonic Noorderslag. Under the title Meet the Music Supervisors at ESNS we organised a matchmaking session, because as you know, we're all about facilitating, mobilising and professionalising the creative and music industries, and there's no better or more fun way to do that than by placing like-minded people directly in front of each other.

Meet the Music Supervisors at ESNS is presented by DME, supported by Buma Music in Motion

You could also find us at ESNS 2019 with a few panels about composing, sync and partnerships with brands. On Thursday January 17: I’m With the Brand, Friday January 18: Taking it up a Level: The Soundtrack that makes the Game and on Saturday January 19: The Sync Songwriting Camp Follow-Up Debrief. Also, on Thursday and Friday: we hosted our second sync-themed songwriters camp, where twenty-four immensely talented writers, drawn from acts performing at Eurosonic, were brought together for a two day writers camp in the Artist Village. In the panel on Saturday, a team of specialists, together with the audience, analysed and discussed all the tracks written during the camp.

Netherlands Film Festival 2018

NFF2018.jpg
During the Dutch Film Festival (NFF), NFF and Buma Music in Motion organised a matchmaking session between young filmmakers and composers in the hope that something would be sparked which might lead to possible collaborations. The filmmakers shared their scripts, screenplays in development, film plans and/or visions, while the composers went to work by making demos for a specific scene. In the Script & Score programme during NFF, composers and filmmakers got acquainted with each other’s work. The event was a success for both parties, and everyone was genuinely enthusiastic, here are some reactions from the filmmakers:

"I felt very honoured to hear an elaborate soundtrack for my film so early in the development of the project."
"I found it very inspiring and special that so many people have given their time and attention to my script and very valuable to listen to what was made."
"We made two follow-up appointments, so it would be very good if we can continue to work with one of them. It is really a matter of looking for the right working match."

International Film Festival Rotterdam

Connects_IFFR2018.jpg
IFFR is one of the largest audience and industry-driven film festivals in the world. During twelve festival days, hundreds of filmmakers and other artists present their work to a large audience. During IFFR, IFFR PRO takes place, which includes expert panels, talks and masterclasses, Rotterdam Lab and much more. IFFR PRO also includes CineMart, the first international co-production market of its kind. CineMart presents a carefully curated mix of international projects that are looking for financing a selective group of around 650 film professionals. We’ve invited composers and publishers to join us for a lunch with international producers and directors during CineMart. During this powerlunch networking was done and we discussed pressing issues like the fact that music is often treated as the hurried final step of a very long process. But what if we worked in a different way? You can find some notes that were taken iffr.com/en/blog/cinemart-x-buma-powerlunch

Alongside that, we organised a Script & Score: meetings between composers and director/producer duos for projects in production where a composer has still not been chosen. The projects were ‘Kung Fu Leeuw’ from director FroukjeTan & producer Sabine Veenendaal (Submarine) and ‘Hiernamaals’ from director Willem Bosch & producer Felix van Gisbergen (Pupkin).

Writing Camp at Eurosonic Noorderslag

Every January Eurosonic Noorderslag is undeniably the epicentre of European music. For this reason, BMIM joined forces with Sizzer Amsterdam and organised a Writing Camp with nine highly talented (both domestic and international) musicians, who also played the showcase festival at night. During the day they wrote brand-new tailor-made compositions for actual briefs, like the new brand theme for Etos.
